Simplified Interpretations of Playing Cards

Have you every wanted to do or were ask to do a "reading" using cards? Most of us have. Some have Tarot cards or the Gypsy Witch decks, but not having a special deck should not hamper you from doing a "reading"/ Just use a borrowed or your own regular deck of playing. So you don't know what to do not that you have a deck in your hand, right?

Well Albright in 1939 wrote up this method. Yes that long ago. As it says on the front page of this catalog, we are devoting this page to restoring old and out of print manuscripts. This is one of the easiest methods I seen. The fact that Albright wrote this in 1939  does not out date the material found in it's four (4) pages. Yes only four pages.

He list the meaning of all 13 cards and how the four suits change and effect the meaning of a card. Then he tells you a very simple and straight forward way of  learning and remembering each card. Then a simple lay-out. So now your all set. Get a deck, the older and worn the better as there are no 'Magic' moves to learn. Nothing to get 'caught at. No this is a reading not a trick. You guest or audience will love what you do.

Dr. Q's Sight Unseen

Or The Real Blindfold Eye Act

This act was originally sold by Thayer Magic Studio in Los Angles. Long since out of print and never copyrighted by anyone else, I felt that it should not be lost to the Mentalism art. Yes it's the "Down-the-nose" peek, but it shows the right way to do the blindfold. It also shows the way to set up the stage and how to use the spectators that you ask to assist you on stage.

After the bandages and tapes are applied what do you do? I have added things to do from my experience in the art for over 50 years.

Many a performer owes his success to this act because this is where they started. One I can name, because I taught him, is Glenn Falkenstein. I have added a whole page of ways to read and do a Q&A act using this blindfold and the Hull Tent Card.

Mind Signals

 A 2-Person Code Act

Many of you might have seen acts like The Tuckers (Liz & Tommy) or The Evasions ( Jeff & Tessa ) and wondered if you could that act. Then you answered yourself and said. "NO that's too much work!" . And you'd be right. those acts have take years of practice and personal commitment! They worked at for a long while and added as they went. They work a lot and stay in practice.

So is all lost? No you can do an act that is not as deep in detail, but looks some what like theirs. You can have you partner answer what playing card has been chosen while she/he is on stage and blindfolded. There are several 'codes' out there that can do that. I even have one here in my catalog by the name of Keep It Dark.

However Mind Signals goes farther doing things from peoples pockets or hand bags. Things they may be wearing. The beauty is that once you learn the method, which is rather easy, the rest is even easier! Why? Because the same code is used and only the items are changed. Learn one matrix and you only need to plug in different items. Five matrix, the first is for playing cards and the other four are for different groups of items such as "money", "items that a person might wear" and "things from the packet or hand bag" etc.

So you see a lot is covered. Are there words to learn that don't sound right when spoken? No! None of that old code stuff from Vaudeville. Just words such as " Yes, Right, That's Right or Fine or just keeping silent. There are even some hand and arm codes that are easy to learn. Do you need to practice? "YES!" Nothing that is worth doing is worth doing correctly and the only way to do that is PRACTICE!

As you learn this more code will come to you as they did with the pro acts. If you want to do a code act this, in my opinion, one of the best! Don't let the date it was written fool you. It's a good today as it was in 1944 because it's material in not dated. The price will not hold you back so if you want to try send for it. And as John wrote you don't have to have a wife to do it. Nor do you have to have a woman. Either a two person male or two person female act will work. So go for it!

Smoke Rays

I know that there have been of late a whole bunch of DVDs and instructions both in books and stand alone sets of "how" paper. However this is from the beginning and is how the 'master' did it.

For no other reason than that it is worth reading and having in your file book. Does it break new ground? NO! But it's neat to read and understand how it was first done. You may have had a set of instructions on how to read the "center" while tearing and thought "That's cool!" However Ted shows that you don't need to read it in one hard to do move. Still want to practice and learn that tear?

Sure, learn as many ways as possible so that it can be done under all conditions. I enjoyed reading the basic way Ted did it at the start. In this set of four (4) pages Ted shows you his basic method. Then he gives you his way of presenting it while sitting down. They two more methods by two of his friends. So in four pages you receive three uses and Ted's original thinking.

Spirit Rope Ties

For those that have looked for methods that look imposable - here are some that have fooled the best. Yes Sid wrote this before some of you were born, however they are not just 'old ' tricks.

Where or when have you seen a cereal  box with a magic rope tie that would or could be used in a demonstration of Spirit Manifestations? You haven't! Not even a "Dummies" book or a book for "Beginners"!

No rope ties have not been like a lot of magic, shown around for the general public. There are still some areas of our art the the "Exposérs" haven't gotten around to "yet"! If you have ever though of doing a Entertaining Séance as a part of your act or as an in-home show, this manuscript is a 'must read'!

Brain Busters

This manuscript has several effects that are stand alone. They are of a wide range of stunning effects designed to be Brain Busters, a name they borrowed from Dunninger. However  I don't feel most of them would make the cut to the Dunninger show. Are there good material?

Yes! I'm restoring this for the knowledge that is in this old material. Why? Because almost all the "new" effects are built on the old. So read all you can.

Spirit Messages

Mr. Marquis performed this routine as a "look a-like" of a spirit séance. A clever use of messages 'filled' in on preprinted cards, is the jest of this manuscript. While the 'patter' is for 'message bearing' the method will stand the user in good stead in a simple Q&A routine and doesn't have to be used as a spirit routine.

In the text he gives patter about the Fox Sisters and the start of Spiritualism. As he delivers the text he is stating that he will duplicate what a 'so-called' spirit medium would do. So is he contacting the spirit world or is he just doing tricks? On that point alone I would not do the routine as written. So why have I saved it? 

Well because the method is worth it! And this page is devoted to the saving of old and out of date routines. Knowledge is worth the price. The last page gives samples of the preprinted cards and their size and thoughts by me on how to extend there use.

Dr Q's Mysterious Want Ad Test

This effect was written by C. Alexander, known as Dr. Q, in the mid 1920s

While today it would not lend it’s self to a stage or possibly even banquet style shows, it could be done at private parties.

Yes it is dated material, but as with most of the writings of the past, they are worth the reading and there is something to be learned.

I have taken on this task so that the old should not be lost!

This effect uses a Medium and a receiver or more to the point, a sender and a receiver. Also you as acting as the director. In this case however the sender is a spectator. Really three spectators as it's done three (3) times. The effect is that the Mentalist, that's you, shows a complete news paper of the day and has a spectator take the Want-Ad section and chose a double page that has ads on one side and news or pictures on the other. The reason given is that you want to be sure which side you are reading.

 

Now with a pair of scissors the Mentalist starts cutting up ads, about 100 or so of them and letting them drop on a plate. He asks for the help of several spectators to take these ads and fold them in half. When all is done he picks up a pile of "coin" envelopes and asks that an ad be placed in each, one to an envelope, and sealed. There are, when finished, about 13 sealed envelopes each really containing an ad.

 

Now a single envelope is selected and opened by a spectator and the Medium, on stage or up in front, while blindfolded, tells what is on the ad, not word for word but the important things such as names, what it's about and a phone number if given. Enough information so that there can be no doubt that the medium is correct. The selecting of the envelopes is honest and straight forward! The envelopes are dumped into a large unprepared bowl. In this open manor the three spectators have a free choice!

No there are no codes! This is not a code act! It is a series of clever switches for ads the contents of which the Medium knows. In the end, with some 10 envelopes left,  you can toss them out or leave them for the "Wise Guys" to grab and open. There is nothing to find as you have switched back the original envelopes with he real ads.

 

Though 'dated' there is, as I said in the beginning, a lot to learn. I uses a set of very neat and well thought-out switches.

The King Felton Blindfold

and other adaptations by Carlyle

This is the original text as released by Thayer Magic in Los Angles in the 1940s. The method is complete and is doable if limited. The basic method is what is important.

I have taken that method and expanded on it by explaining how I used it in the '50 through the '90s. I tell how other commercial metal blindfolds may be adopted to the basic method.

That method is to have a two part blindfold. The first piece is just over the eyes. The second is a hood that fits over the first and your head tying at the neck.. Yet you can see! I expand on the where and when of the use of this style of Blindfold.

No blindfold is supplied with these instructions.

The instructions takes you from the original in the early part of the 20th Century through today. This is not to be confused with the Dr. Q version explained and sold above on this page. They are both good and workable methods and should be learned and practiced if you intend to do a Second Sight Act or Sightless Vision.

Several working Mentalist, working today here in the 21 Century, use Blindfolds. Some use them in conjunction with their Q&A acts. Some close their acts with Sightless Vision. It still pleases the audience. Learn from the past. That is the reason we, here at Carlyle Enterprises, have taken it upon ourselves to restore, expand and bring them up to the present times these old manuscripts.

Fortune Telling Card Trick

Time and time again, Magicians are asked, after they have done a few card tricks, "Can you tell fortunes with cards?" Fortune telling with cards has always been interesting, but Magicians in general do not care to spend the time learning it. Besides, there is not trick to it. Now, however, you can say "Yes”, to the query.

Not only that, you can actually tell persons their ages, how many brothers, sisters they have whom they are expecting a letter from, the month of their birth, the year something important happened in their lives and numerous other interesting facts.

You can do this with a person you have never seen before, and he (or she) positively does not write down the information, whisper it to anyone or tell a living soul. And you do not know the facts until you shuffle the cards and deal them out in a series of circles. Then you read the cards as they fall. The cards tell you all these interesting facts about anyone.

Believe it or not, the above is an actual fact. You can work this five minutes after reading the instructions, without study or practice. You do not have to learn any special line of chatter as in former methods. Just deal the cards out and read them as they fall! Tell the person he was born on such and such a date, year and month, he is so many years old, he has so many brothers, sisters, etc.

Even that he expects a letter from so and so, etc., and the spectator subject admits each and every item is correct. An actual fact!

This is not mathematical or number stunt!

The above statement is a quote from the first page of the instructions and is true. The value of the cards chosen and stacked per your instructions gives you the answers. Yes you have to remember some simple instructions, but they, as it says in the instructions, can be mastered in a very few minutes. This and H. P. Albright's card reading listed above, should be all you would ever need to answer the question, Do you do card readings?

Now the answer is "YES!"

A Spook Show In Your Parlor

The material in this fun reading booklet is, of course, dated. However I feel that for the most part it can be done. Yes a few changes should be made. Yes some of the material may no longer be bought, but I have used a couple of the ideas, in an updated form, in shows I have done in peoples homes while doing my One-Man-In-Home Séance.

So read for fun or learn and file away an idea or two, but do enjoy! In 1947 it sold for only one dollar. I feel that 63 years later and with updates by me, today it's worth . . .
